[2007-04-06 17:57:11] Lara: Hello VJTheory
[2007-04-06 17:57:14] vjtheory: Hello Lara
[2007-04-06 17:57:32] Lara: Looking forward to this chat this evening
[2007-04-06 17:57:57] vjtheory: We were looking foprward to it for a few days
[2007-04-06 17:58:16] Lara: cool :)
[2007-04-06 17:59:01] vjtheory: we will wait a little while, if that's ok
[2007-04-06 17:59:21] Lara: sure no problems
[2007-04-06 17:59:26] vjtheory: How you Lara?
[2007-04-06 17:59:51] Lara: Very good been working hard today
[2007-04-06 17:59:55] Lara: such a nice day
[2007-04-06 18:00:02] Lara: and you?
[2007-04-06 18:00:07] vjtheory: We are working as asingle entity tonight
[2007-04-06 18:00:22] Lara: cool is that easy or hard
[2007-04-06 18:00:24] vjtheory: but beautiful day here too
[2007-04-06 18:02:12] vjtheory: ok we think it's time to start, could be just these two entities tonight
[2007-04-06 18:02:29] Lara: cool I am still excited
[2007-04-06 18:02:53] vjtheory: cool. introduction...
[2007-04-06 18:03:36] vjtheory: As a group of people we are two, we are four (Paul and you) and we are also many (with our contributors)
[2007-04-06 18:03:59] vjtheory: we are one as well as VJ Theory
[2007-04-06 18:05:05] vjtheory: Is as VJ Theory - as someone said once - the entity that we are here tonight to moderate a discussion on performer and its
[2007-04-06 18:05:33] vjtheory: persona, role and who are the performers?
[2007-04-06 18:06:22] vjtheory: and also what role performance has in realtime media
[2007-04-06 18:07:16] vjtheory: We also are interested in your view of the fuitlesness of considering the audience in VJing?
[2007-04-06 18:08:18] Lara: only or mainly the reasons for Vjing from the audience's perspective
[2007-04-06 18:08:36] Lara: perhaps like art movements like action painting?
[2007-04-06 18:08:43] vjtheory: Aha!
[2007-04-06 18:08:54] Lara: I was so impressed by Mark Amerika's paper though, it blew my mind
[2007-04-06 18:09:23] vjtheory: Ma
[2007-04-06 18:10:11] vjtheory: rThat's Mark was supposed to be doing this but he had to do something at the uni.
[2007-04-06 18:10:26] Lara: bummer
[2007-04-06 18:10:43] Lara: but I am happy with VJtheory!
[2007-04-06 18:10:57] Lara: tell me what you thought of his paper as non-VJs
[2007-04-06 18:11:04] Lara: but still artists
[2007-04-06 18:11:13] vjtheory: How come people work on good Friday (like us  )
[2007-04-06 18:11:53] vjtheory: anyway, back to the conversation...
[2007-04-06 18:12:49] vjtheory: we would like to know what you think about the fact that VJs use another name to perform.
[2007-04-06 18:13:33] Lara: well it is great that we are having this talk because in the middle of the week I was doing more ethn
[2007-04-06 18:13:51] Lara: ography and i asked people why they used VJ names and I got a great responses
[2007-04-06 18:14:02] Lara: let me get the book from downstairs and I will tell you them
[2007-04-06 18:14:16] vjtheory: alright
[2007-04-06 18:15:40] Lara: ok my friend mo said that 'if you want to be in control of what you're showing on the screen
[2007-04-06 18:15:43] Paul: Hello
[2007-04-06 18:15:53] Lara: you can't really do that with your real name'
[2007-04-06 18:16:07] vjtheory: Hi Paul, nice to see you.
[2007-04-06 18:16:10] Lara: which I thought was really very interesting
[2007-04-06 18:16:13] Lara: Hey
[2007-04-06 18:16:32] vjtheory:
[2007-04-06 18:16:37] Lara: some of the other Vjs said that it was a chance to express themselves through having a new name
[2007-04-06 18:17:03] Lara: that was more expressive or 'meant' more than their given name
[2007-04-06 18:17:20] vjtheory: does it means they want to be someone else they asre not on an everiday basis?
[2007-04-06 18:17:38] vjtheory: or are they expanding or several selves?
[2007-04-06 18:17:45] Lara: others thought that having a name was part of being an artists
[2007-04-06 18:18:28] Paul: i think a persona can be a vehicle for adding meaning in some cases
[2007-04-06 18:19:48] vjtheory: or hiding? 'Lord of the Flies'.
[2007-04-06 18:19:54] Paul: a character through which to explore
[2007-04-06 18:20:03] vjtheory: Or 'Lord of the Files'
[2007-04-06 18:20:59] Paul: lara's just crashed, will be back in a sec
[2007-04-06 18:21:00] vjtheory: to explore?
[2007-04-06 18:21:55] Paul: well, for example vj anyones name came around through some his early research on his masters degree i think
[2007-04-06 18:22:01] vjtheory: A portuguese poet - Fernando pessoa - used a lot of names to write his works
[2007-04-06 18:22:19] vjtheory: It is a reccurent example we use
[2007-04-06 18:22:21] Lara: Hi sorry crash-ola
[2007-04-06 18:22:37] vjtheory: but not happy only with using another name
[2007-04-06 18:22:48] Paul: he had a keen interest in identity and anonymoity, though i guess that changed in later years
[2007-04-06 18:23:00] vjtheory: he actually constructed biographies for each one of the poets within himself
[2007-04-06 18:23:13] Lara: interesting
[2007-04-06 18:23:13] Paul: initially he used things like annie01, neone etc
[2007-04-06 18:23:15] vjtheory: and they had a separate life altogether.
[2007-04-06 18:23:32] vjtheory: although living the same body (physical)
[2007-04-06 18:24:12] vjtheory: This goes beyound just a name of course. but suits as example for how far we can take others within ourselves
[2007-04-06 18:25:03] Lara: ust to finish off the responses I had, someone else said that you wouldn't want to have your own name VJing because
[2007-04-06 18:25:13] Lara: 'you wouldn't want to be tied to what you did'
[2007-04-06 18:25:26] vjtheory: Why did he settle eventually on the more straight forward anyone (or did he)?
[2007-04-06 18:25:35] Lara: others cited the DJ NAME
[2007-04-06 18:25:58] Lara: and one lady had to have a VJ name as she was using lots of stolen footage from work -
[2007-04-06 18:26:08] Lara: an archive of TV and video!
[2007-04-06 18:26:17] Lara: so some very interesting responses
[2007-04-06 18:26:49] Paul: i think he ended up with anyone because he decided to focus his work on one form, ie vjing
[2007-04-06 18:27:04] vjtheory: really interesting
[2007-04-06 18:27:50] Lara: and one person thought that artists should or had to have a different name
[2007-04-06 18:28:01] vjtheory: It also seems 'self effacing' a bit like VJ Rubbish here.
[2007-04-06 18:28:03] Lara: so to what extent are people conforming to the norms of the community?
[2007-04-06 18:28:18] Lara: especially in terms of VJs who meet and know each other online -
[2007-04-06 18:28:35] Lara: is there a strong link to alternate identities on message boards?
[2007-04-06 18:29:39] vjtheory: So quite a few reasons altogether; all us single entity 'VJ Theory'
[2007-04-06 18:30:28] Lara: when I was at the mckenzie wark talk the other week he was talking about investigating 'gamer subjectivity'
[2007-04-06 18:30:42] vjtheory: How about more controversially, isn't it 'branding'?
[2007-04-06 18:30:55] Lara: i presumed he meant this as in how people construct their identities as 'gamers'
[2007-04-06 18:31:03] vjtheory: gamer subjectivity sound good
[2007-04-06 18:31:09] Lara: I think there is a very large element of this
[2007-04-06 18:31:25] Lara: each VJ wants to be known uniquely
[2007-04-06 18:31:43] Lara: I wonder if there is 'VJ subjectivity'
[2007-04-06 18:32:26] vjtheory: Thereby splitting your performing subjectivity from a socially organized subjectivity in the other world you have to obey?
[2007-04-06 18:32:40] Lara: yes
[2007-04-06 18:32:45] Lara: I reckon
[2007-04-06 18:33:22] Lara: how do you think these identities work?
[2007-04-06 18:33:25] vjtheory: So in this sense it's a radical and conscious subverting of your self?
[2007-04-06 18:33:31] Lara: do they come out only when in the VJ world?
[2007-04-06 18:33:51] Lara: not sure - I don't know too much about identity formation theory ....
[2007-04-06 18:34:09] Lara: I think that it is an enjoyable experience for people though
[2007-04-06 18:34:29] vjtheory: in Althusser/Lacan it's the process of interpellation or hailing
[2007-04-06 18:34:39] Lara: interesting that I asked the Vjs the other day about their performace styles
[2007-04-06 18:34:58] Lara: I know a little of that from Judith Butler performativity
[2007-04-06 18:35:36] Lara: when I asked VJs about their positioning in relationship to the screen most sais that they didn't want to be centre-stage
[2007-04-06 18:35:43] Lara: as they were 'not that kind of people'
[2007-04-06 18:36:03] Lara: so it seems like a cool transient identity that people create perhaps?
[2007-04-06 18:36:17] Lara: then they are interpellated when they meet other members of the community?
[2007-04-06 18:36:28] vjtheory: In Butler from a performed gender from a radical lesbian perspective
[2007-04-06 18:36:41] Lara: yes - she is the *best*
[2007-04-06 18:37:34] vjtheory: but this is not a new thing - to have a name (call it pseudonomous or persona or whatever)
[2007-04-06 18:37:35] Lara: (my module was feminist technoscience)
[2007-04-06 18:37:49] Lara: no surely a very old thing
[2007-04-06 18:38:26] vjtheory: a lot of writers osed and still do that to write something theat they wouldn't sign with their own names, like pornographic nov
[2007-04-06 18:38:27] Lara: but surely a proliferation of identities through mediation?
[2007-04-06 18:38:37] Lara: internet eg
[2007-04-06 18:38:51] Lara: is a name really a new identity though?
[2007-04-06 18:39:57] vjtheory: or a collective identity like Luther Blissett or, we think, Karen elliot
[2007-04-06 18:41:13] vjtheory: as a kind of neo situatonist thing (Luther) in the eighties mostly
[2007-04-06 18:41:54] Lara: don't know their work but it sounds interesting - how does the collective identity come about in Vjing?
[2007-04-06 18:41:57] vjtheory: Karen Elliot was a collective artist so can't really be situationist though influenced by them
[2007-04-06 18:42:11] vjtheory: Good point
[2007-04-06 18:42:49] vjtheory: Maybe ano0ther place where the possibility of online performance could take it
[2007-04-06 18:43:11] Lara: yes - interesting
[2007-04-06 18:43:24] jem: Sorry I'm late - I was skimboarding at Sennan Cove!
[2007-04-06 18:43:38] Lara: Hi Jem
[2007-04-06 18:43:40] vjtheory: How about a performance by Narrative Lab?
[2007-04-06 18:43:51] vjtheory: Hi Jem
[2007-04-06 18:43:59] Lara: ah yes of course, VJ collectives
[2007-04-06 18:44:07] vjtheory: Sounds good
[2007-04-06 18:44:28] Lara: I am going to ethnography a VJ collective tomorrow
[2007-04-06 18:44:51] Lara: (psy trance - eek)
[2007-04-06 18:45:15] vjtheory: Interesting name, especially lke the eek
[2007-04-06 18:45:31] Lara: lol, no their name is Inside-Us-All
[2007-04-06 18:45:45] Lara: the eek was about going out to a full on psy trance night
[2007-04-06 18:46:12] vjtheory: We are going to be called eek
[2007-04-06 18:46:25] Lara: they started as 3 and now I think they are 4 with one of the original 3 left
[2007-04-06 18:46:46] Lara: they are very nice young men
[2007-04-06 18:46:59] vjtheory: What kind of ethnography?
[2007-04-06 18:47:20] Lara: don't know - I am still learning!
[2007-04-06 18:47:40] Lara: my friend who is an ethnographer in sociology is coming so I hope he will help me
[2007-04-06 18:47:54] Lara: not much goes on during my VJ ethnographies so far
[2007-04-06 18:48:14] Lara: it has been more difficult than I thought as people are quite serious with their technology
[2007-04-06 18:48:48] vjtheory: will it result in a text that we can possibly publist at vjtheory.net?
[2007-04-06 18:49:16] Lara: it will result in a paper for college which I can certainly give you for the website (if it is ok enough)
[2007-04-06 18:49:46] vjtheory: You mean just talk about their technology? Cheers, yes.
[2007-04-06 18:50:02] Lara: no I am going to tlk about their identity formation practices
[2007-04-06 18:50:38] Lara: I couldn't get that comment of Mo's out of my head last week
[2007-04-06 18:50:42] Lara: so intersting:
[2007-04-06 18:50:46] vjtheory: Sorry, what did you mean 'technology'
[2007-04-06 18:51:09] vjtheory: What waqs that?
[2007-04-06 18:51:21] Lara: well a performance can be very vibrant on screen, but the VJ is totally still and focussed on their laptop
[2007-04-06 18:51:30] Lara: as serious as if they were landing a plane
[2007-04-06 18:51:45] vjtheory: not all of them.
[2007-04-06 18:51:53] Lara: so in ethnography it is difficult to 'see' 'performance' in the physical body of the VJ
[2007-04-06 18:52:11] Lara: yes of course, but I am talking about the few sessions I have done only
[2007-04-06 18:52:31] vjtheory: There are a few who like to be seen performing and use technol;ogical ways in their performance to expose themselves - while p[
[2007-04-06 18:52:38] vjtheory: performing
[2007-04-06 18:52:49] jem: Are you going to video the VJs?
[2007-04-06 18:52:51] Lara: oo tell me about them
[2007-04-06 18:53:38] vjtheory: (we are thinking about a specific one actually)
[2007-04-06 18:53:51] Lara: what is their name?
[2007-04-06 18:54:03] vjtheory: Magenta likes to be seen
[2007-04-06 18:54:29] Lara: is Magenta a lady?
[2007-04-06 18:54:50] vjtheory: and she uses lights and rotating devises. you couldn't miss her
[2007-04-06 18:54:51] Lara: Holly Daggers also likes to be seen, as does Miss Nix also in the USA
[2007-04-06 18:55:11] Lara: they have a dominatrix/fetish thing going on
[2007-04-06 18:55:23] Lara: Magenta sounds great I will definitely research
[2007-04-06 18:56:08] vjtheory: Also there is the role of the technology in propriety vj software and the role of the performer
[2007-04-06 18:56:51] vjtheory: but that's a whole new discussion
[2007-04-06 18:57:37] vjtheory: and now - to finish with - how about the public as performers too?
[2007-04-06 18:58:08] jem: I liked Andrew Bucksbarg's performance VJ technology
[2007-04-06 18:59:12] vjtheory: His text is very important to us. as individual practicioners
[2007-04-06 19:00:12] jem: Using wii type technology to perform with
[2007-04-06 19:01:01] vjtheory: In our view he started - or maybe with Solu actually - that language of VJing you (Lara) mentioned in another chat
[2007-04-06 19:01:30] vjtheory: or maybe narrative lab did?
[2007-04-06 19:02:18] Lara: not quite yet :)
[2007-04-06 19:02:22] vjtheory: we have passwed the time for this chat and uncle Joe isn't here
[2007-04-06 19:03:01] vjtheory: now we understand other moderator's position...
[2007-04-06 19:03:27] vjtheory: not quite yet. but it started. and the need is also there
[2007-04-06 19:03:46] Lara: yes I agree v much
[2007-04-06 19:04:51] vjtheory: but maybe we shouldn't reify (in the sense of 'fix';) the language, but that'll be difficult
[2007-04-06 19:05:15] vjtheory: alright guys. shall we finish here?
[2007-04-06 19:05:48] jem: Well thanks very much VJ Theory for hosting these talks
[2007-04-06 19:05:53] vjtheory: we would like to thank you all and all the participants in all the 6 chat sessions for the amazing conversations
[2007-04-06 19:05:58] Lara: ok, great to talk with you VJTheory, thanks :) I have enjoyed these chats very much
[2007-04-06 19:06:12] jem: me too
[2007-04-06 19:06:15] vjtheory: we did indeed too.
[2007-04-06 19:06:58] vjtheory: thatnk you specially to you Jem for being there throughout the whole event with us
[2007-04-06 19:07:03] Lara: Ok I must go back to the essay books :/
[2007-04-06 19:07:18] Lara: see you all soon :)
[2007-04-06 19:07:31] vjtheory: and to Paul and Lara for being our co editors and participats and moderators being great
[2007-04-06 19:07:36] jem: OK. Take care.
[2007-04-06 19:07:50] vjtheory: and their sup[port is very appreciated
[2007-04-06 19:08:24] vjtheory: this experiment seems to have worked, bye Paul
